  43. FWIW, I've got a Kenwood 850S/AT; have had it for 4 years and still would 
  44. not trade it for any other radio.  It is a first class radio both for 
  45. SSB/CW and digital work.  I've compared it to the 990 and frankly, the 
  46. 850 is more radio for the money.  I also think that the receiver is better.

  73. Back when I was at Georgia Tech, we hooked up our kerosene fired
  74. scope to the Victrola and did this too. (Well maybe it wasn't *quite*
  75. that long ago, but the Tek 545 was current production.) Anyway, one of
  76. the games we played was trying to identify the songs by *only* looking
  77. at the scope. Turned out to be pretty easy for a lot of songs. You could
  78. also spot which songs were done in which studios, and which engineer
  79. mixed them, just by watching the scope.

  81. We also hooked up the outputs of our (analog) computers to the scope
  82. and did computer "art". A couple of A/D converters could let you do
  83. that with today's digital computers. Vector graphics doesn't suffer 
  84. from pixel jaggies like raster scan graphics does. You can get pretty
  85. good wireframe drawings that look like they were done with pen and ink.

  101. I can save you some money too... Call up Ray's Amateur Electronics in
  102. High Point, NC and order, for the same $200.00 that you would have
  103. spent on a Radio Shack, an Alinco DJ180T: It has extended Receive,
  104. the same amount of memories (expandable up to 200 Memories) as the RS
  105. HT, and is considerably smaller. It comes with belt clip, Nicad
  106. battery, and desk charger. Not a bad little HT at all. And plus, you
  107. don't have to worry about hiring a pack mule to carry it whenever you
  108. go out of the house....It is small and light. Ray's number is

  140. The HTX-202 has, for some stupid reason, been bashed. Don't know why.
  141. It is a solid performer. And it's on sale this month for two hundred
  142. dollars. A great intro into the world of Amateur Radio.

  163. Actually, the 4XC250B is an RF beam tetrode; testing them as triodes is
  164. guaranteed to produce wierd results :-)

  166. I test used tubes by placing them in an amplifier circuit and testing for
  167. RF power output, with the following voltages: Heater, 5.8V; Control Grid -65V;
  168. Screen Grid 325V, Anode 2150V. And just because they produce so RF output,
  169. that doesn't mean that they're any good! The IMD products from an apparently
  170. 'good' tube can be terrible.

  218. Just got off the phone with a very nice TenTec engineer
  219. and we were talking about the 1208 xverter and the prob's
  220. with its production.  Here's the low down:

  222. Manuals are at the printer and will be in next Tuesday.
  223. He said they expect to have kits ready to be out the 
  224.    door toward the end of NEXT WEEK!!!!

  226. Operational note:
  227. Why only good from 50-52 MHz?  Why Why WHY???
  228.   Apparently the products are within Part 97 specs
  229.   from 50-52 MHz.  Beyond 52 MHz, the other mixing
  230.   products aren't down below what's required by 
  231.   part 97 regs.  The xverter WILL work up at 54 MHz,
  232.   but it violates the FCC regs, so it is NOT intended
  233.   for use up there.

  279. I have an Icom W2A HT that seems to discharge batteries when turned
  280. off. It draws about 18ma from any attached power source. It will drain
  281. the BP-84 in a day or two if left attached. Has anyone else has this
  282. problem? Is there an internal backup battery that's shorted? It seemed
  283. to start doing this after I left it unused for about 6 months. Any
  284. insight appreciated!

  309. about the transverters that used to be available for the Kenwood 520-S?
  310. I remember reading about a 6M transverter that was available... maybe
  311. even a 2M model. What do you think a fair used price would be for one
  312. these days (some 15 years later :-)? Is there any place that might deal
  313. in older Kenwood equipment?
